A
crash landing on school fields in 1943.
I was a kid at Alderman Richard Hallam Junior
school in Anstey Lane during the war when in about 1943 we heard
that a plane had crash landed on the playing fields at the back
of the school. We dashed up to see it on the field at the top of
Somerset Avenue. The Teachers and Police kept us well away, but
I think it may have been a Beaufighter. We heard that it had clipped
a chimney in Buckminster Road. On the way
home to Bembridge Close after school we checked this out and sure
enough, the chimney was in the back garden. Obviously a close shave
all round!
